Accessible washbasins

Wheelchair users and people with physical disabilities have special requirements when it comes to bathroom furnishings and handwashbasins in particular. For this reason, Villeroy & Boch has developed the ViCare collection, which combines sophisticated functions with perfect, elegant design. Find out more below about how a modern bathroom can be designed to be barrier-free and what you should look out for when adapting your home.

Under-mounted washbasin

The washbasin must be wheelchair-accessible so that people who are dependent on a wheelchair can also use the bathroom independently. This is achieved by ensuring that the washbasin is at the right height and that there is sufficient space underneath it. In addition, frontal grab rails or a grip groove are integrated on the underside to allow the wheelchair user to easily pull up to the washbasin.

What must be observed during installation?

Generally binding specifications for barrier-free washbasins in wheelchair-accessible homes can be found in DIN 18040, Part 2. This standard defines, for example, a minimum wheelchair accessibility of 45 cm for handwashbasins and 55 cm for washbasins. This is achieved with the models from the ViCare collection thanks to a particularly flat basic shape that offers at least 30 cm of knee clearance. Furthermore, the manoeuvring space in front of the washbasin should be at least 150 x 150 cm to allow easy manoeuvring.

The right height

DIN 18040 also makes clear specifications regarding installation height: The top edge of the washbasin should be installed at a maximum height of 80 cm. A mirror directly above the washbasin should be at least 100 cm high and allow people to see into it while sitting or standing.

With or without base cabinet

A vanity unit provides additional storage space in the immediate vicinity of the washbasin and also conceals the siphon and drain. However, a vanity unit does not fulfil the requirement of being able to slide under the washbasin. It must therefore be considered on a case-by-case basis whether towels, washing utensils and other everyday items can also be stored in a cabinet or shelf next to the washbasin in order to fulfil the requirements of DIN 18040.
